Situated 20 miles west of downtown Los Angeles, on the Pacific Ocean coast, Santa Monica is a resort city which offers the best of all possible worlds for visitors looking for a sunshine beach holiday and for exploring the wider delights of LA County. Further popular streets to note include Montana Avenue, where the young jet set hang out, Main Street, for the surfers and bikers, and Third Street Promenade, a vibrant community with all manner of live street performance, bars, restaurants and movie theatres. This area is just three blocks from the beach and Santa Monica Pier, a great old traditional pier with characteristic Ferris wheel and other family attractions. Stretching either side of the pier is the wide Santa Monica Beach, the main hive of summer activity and the ideal backdrop for cycling or rollerblading along the Strand. The Strand is the common thread which links all the beach cities of the Westside and it is the vantage point of choice for some people watching.
