Situated 20 miles west of downtown Los Angeles, on the Pacific Ocean coast, Santa Monica is a resort city which offers the best of all possible worlds for visitors looking for a sunshine beach holiday and for exploring the wider delights of LA County. At the heart of it all is the famous Santa Monica Pier, the western terminal on historic Route 66, and from here the beach takes over and city life radiates to encompass a culture which is typically LA but always with its own special Santa Monica attitudes to life and leisure. Here the surfers mix with the young professionals and the movers and shakers to present a place always at the forefront of stylish summer fun.

There are good reasons for spending summer vacations in Santa Monica and not all to do with the city itself. With the sea breeze the temperatures are more bearable here than in the baking heat of the San Fernando Valley and the city occupies a location which makes for a an excellent start point for wider travels. In addition to downtown LA, Venice Beach, Malibu, and Beverley Hills are all within easy reach and so a Santa Monica hotel provides the ideal base for any Los Angeles adventure. Most visitors will however choose to spend their time on the beach, on the pier and within the city, and there are very good reasons for that too.

First time visitors to the city should make their first port of call one of the three visitor information centres. These are well equipped to deal with enquiries and will offer a wealth of attraction and event information as well as manage ticket and tour sales. Since its foundation, the city has always been a visitor resort and so has a well developed infrastructure for travel and for all the hotels, bars, nightlife, entertainments, shops and restaurants to cope with large tourist numbers. Rare in LA, it is easy to get around on foot with most of the main attractions within walking distance of each other and centred around the main thoroughfares of Santa Monica, Wilshire, and Lincoln Boulevards.

Further popular streets to note include Montana Avenue, where the young jet set hang out, Main Street, for the surfers and bikers, and Third Street Promenade, a vibrant community with all manner of live street performance, bars, restaurants and movie theatres. This area is just three blocks from the beach and Santa Monica Pier, a great old traditional pier with characteristic Ferris wheel and other family attractions. Stretching either side of the pier is the wide Santa Monica Beach, the main hive of summer activity and the ideal backdrop for cycling or rollerblading along the Strand. The Strand is the common thread which links all the beach cities of the Westside and it is the vantage point of choice for some people watching.

With everything close at hand any centrally placed hotel in Santa Monica will suffice for those who want to spend their time taking in the sights and enjoying the many activities and attractions on offer. Those who like their luxuries and comforts have many more options and as one of the richest cities in America there is no shortage of top luxury hotels which can match any other for style, amenities and on-site leisure features. This is a city popular with all sorts of visitors however and while the residents may life the lifestyle of the rich and famous it is possible to stay in the city without too much outlay, and feel no less a part of the city vibe and culture.
